Inspired by the Dark Side of Japan, the MT-07 has taken the world by storm – and is now one of Yamaha’s best-selling bikes of all time. When you add it all up, even if your’e not exactly a naked sport bike or streetfighter style bike fan, it’s easy to see why this has been such a great seller. However, the competition in this booming corner of the market is fierce and you have more naked sport bikes to choose from than ever. If you’re not a brand loyalist, it’s definitely in your best interest to shop the offerings from all of the major manufacturers as they all come in at similar price-points but that’s about the only thing that’s similar between them as they are all packing different engine configurations whether it be a V-twin, parallel-twin, inline four-cylinder etc.

Yamaha has decided to mix things up and make their naked sport bike model lineup a little easier to understand for people around the world and the FZ nameplate will now be replaced as the MT (MT = Master of Torque) for each model’s prefix. Instead of a model being an FZ here in the USA and then known as an MT model in Europe etc even though they were the same model. So now, for 2018 what we did know as the FZ-07 will now me referred to as the MT-07 to match its long-lost siblings: MT-09 & MT-10.

The engine, rightfully so, becomes the headliner a lot of times when it comes to a motorcycle. Aside from a bike’s overall styling, the engine with its sound and power delivery is what really gives a motorcycle character. You could have the sexiest bike on the planet but then throw a lackluster engine to propel it down the road and the second you take off, you forget how beautiful it was and are already regretting your choice as that engine is what’s going to keep you entertained for mile after mile and year after year. Thankfully, Yamaha knows a thing or two about building engines with character… Ever heard of the Lexus LFA? I know this is a little off-topic but bare with me for a second. Go to YouTube and listen to the LFA’s engine, which Yamaha built. The noise that engine emits is music, it’s not just “noise”. That’s why I say that Yamaha knows a thing or two about building an engine with true character to it. Its compact 689 cc, inline, 2-cylinder ‘crossplane philosophy’ engine is engineered to give you strong, linear torque for acceleration that’ll pull your arms back while still offering fuel economy numbers that come in right at 58 miles per gallon. Let’s take a deeper dive into the MT-07’s engine though…
